How To Make Your Own Natural Bath Salts
Making your own natural bath salts can be a lot of fun and can save you a considerable sum of money if you happen to be a bath salt junkie who just can't seem to get enough of these delicious smelling, relaxing tub additives.
Deciding On The Base Ingredient
First, you must decide what you want to use as a base for your bath salts. You have a choice between Epsom Salt, Pacific Sea Salt, Dead Sea Salt, Breton Organic Grey Sea Salt from France Pink Himalayan Sea Salt, Dendritic Salt, Ibiza Spa European Sea Salt, Ceara Atlantic Sea Salt, Bokek Dead Sea Salt, Sonoma Spa Pacific Sea Salt, Rio Atlantic Sea Salt Crystals, Minera Dead Sea Salt, EuroSpa European Sea Salt from the Mediterranean Sea or Utah Red Natural Kosher Sea Salt.
As you can see, you have plenty of variety in your salt selection! Each salt has its own merits, and is available for purchase in bulk, from 5 pounds up to 480 pounds!
Scent And Color
Once you have decided what type of salt you want to use, you must decide whether or not you want to add a scent and/or a color to your natural bath salts. You can get many aromatherapy benefits by using essentials oils, dried herbs, and a coloring agent if desired. Use caution when selecting essential oils, as there are some which you should not use in the bath. They include basil, oregano, bay, cinnamon, thyme, nutmeg, oregano, clove, and black pepper.
Make certain that you follow a recipe for making your natural bath salts, and use the amount of essential oil that is called for. Don't assume that if a little oil smells good, the whole bottle will smell better! These oils are highly concentrated, and using too much of them may irritate the skin, especially when mixed with the hot water of a tub bath.
Some popular essential oils for use in natural bath salts include bergamot, eucalyptus, frankincense, geranium, grapefruit, lavender, lemon, lemongrass, lime, orange, patchouli, peppermint, sandalwood, spearmint, tangerine, tea tree, ylang ylang, and vanilla.
Mixing The Ingredients
Now comes the fun part - mixing your ingredients together to make your very own natural bath salts! Measure out your choice of epsom or sea salts and place them into a large container suitable for mixing. Add your essential oil(s), no more than 7 to 10 drops per cup of salt! Your nose can help you out here... you want the bath salts to smell pretty strong so you can get the full aromatherapy benefit.
Stir the salt and oil together until you don't see any clumps. Now, add your colorant. This can be food coloring or a special type of color made for use in bath salts and the like, and sold in craft store. You will want to use about the same amount of color as you did essential oil. Stir, stir, stir, until the color is uniformly mixed. You may want to add a few more drops of color now to adjust the shade. Now is a good time to add dried herbs, if you like. Mix them in well.
Drying And Storing
Spread your new natural bath salts on a cookie sheet and let them dry 4-6 hours, then store in a bottle, bag, or jar of your choice. Well, not quite all of it... save enough out for a test bath! Settle back and enjoy your homemade natural bath salts, and feel good in the knowledge that you can make another batch any time you like!
